Itineraries
The itineraries on this page are built from types of places (an embankment, a cathedral, a museum, a boulevard, a village, a riverbank) rather than from addresses and schedules. That makes them easier to adapt to the season, the weather and your own pace. We don't give distances or travel times, since they depend on the road and the time of year. One rule applies to all three: fewer stops, more breaks.
The best route through Udmurtia leaves time between stops to simply stand and look. A see-it-all checklist doesn't work here.
How these itineraries were put together: you can do each one on your own, and the stops are described as types of places that are easy to find in Izhevsk and the surrounding area.
A day in Izhevsk
The city by the pond on foot, from morning to evening.
Morning on the embankment
Start by the water while the embankment is still quiet. From here you can see how the city spreads out around the pond.
A downtown cathedral
Step into one of the cathedrals. Dress modestly, keep your voice down and ask whether photos are allowed inside.
A city museum
Pick one museum and take your time. A couple of relaxed hours with the exhibits will give you more than a quick dash through several halls.
A boulevard or park
After the museum, stroll down a boulevard or sit in a park: downtown has plenty of green spots for a breather.
Evening by the pond
Head back to the water for sunset. In winter, go out earlier: it gets dark fast, and it's noticeably windier by the pond.
Izhevsk and Votkinsk in a weekend
The city on day one, the composer's house museum on day two.
One base for both nights
Stay in Izhevsk both nights and travel light on your day trip. Check booking terms directly.
Day one downtown
The embankment, a cathedral, a museum and an evening walk: a shorter version of the day in the city.
An early start
On day two, set off early so you don't have to hurry back. Find out ahead of time how you'll return to Izhevsk.
The composer's house museum
Pyotr Tchaikovsky was born in Votkinsk. Check visiting arrangements for the house museum on its official website.
A small-town stroll
After the museum, wander the streets and down to the water: small towns have their own unhurried rhythm.
The trip back
Leave extra time, especially in winter: the drive can take longer than the map suggests.
Three days in Udmurtia
The city, wooden architecture and a quiet village.
The city by the pond
On day one, walk the embankment and downtown and stop by the National Museum of the Udmurt Republic for an overview of the region.
The open-air museum
On day two, head to Ludorvay: wooden buildings are best explored in daylight and dry weather.
A village on the way
If you still have energy, stop in a village. Act like a guest: say hello and don't walk into people's yards.
A river or forest edge
A short walk by a river or along the woods is a nice way to end the day. Stick to clear trails and head back before dark.
Votkinsk or a free day
Spend day three in Votkinsk at the Tchaikovsky house museum, or keep it free in case of bad weather.
An easy departure
Spend your last hours in the city: one more walk along the pond is a good way to say goodbye.
How to adjust your route to the weather
- In bitter cold, shorten the walking stretches and alternate walks with museums
- During a thaw or icy spells, wear shoes with grippy soles and stick to cleared sidewalks
- When it rains, swap your day trip for a day in the downtown museums
- In summer, bring water and a hat: the sun feels stronger by the water
- With kids, plan no more than two major stops a day
